This month’s topic comes to us from @ZoneGhost who a few month ago asked “Is Low Sec the forgotten part of EVE Online?” Is it? I’d like us to explore this even further. Is Low Sec being treated differently by CCP Games than Null Sec (Zero-Zero) or Empire space is? Can one successfully make a living in these unsecured systems where neither Alliance nor Concord roam to enforce their laws? What’s needed? Or is everything fine as it is?
Is low sec the ‘forgotten’ bit of EVE? No. Not forgotten. Low sec is Sloth Fratelli; a freak who’s been dropped on his head, locked in the basement and marginalized, presumably for most of his life. His brothers are shooting up banks, griefing the locals and generally having fun while Sloth sits in shackles in front of a crappy TV. So how do we do a collective Truffle Shuffle, break Sloth free of his chains and let him go all Tarzan on the rest of EVE? Get CCP to feed him some freakin’ Rocky Road ice cream. In a two-pronged approach I’d like to see CCP buff low sec by tweaking an existing industry to make it a ‘characteristic’ of low sec AND make security status less of a prison sentence for it’s, um, ‘freer spirits’.
The Industry Buff: Booster Production
I like boosters and I use them whenever I can in combat. The smaller my gang the more I want that extra percentage of performance for my ship. The problem is that finding boosters is hard, mostly because making them is even harder. If low sec is the ‘lawless’ border between NPC empires and null sec alliances then let’s make illicit booster production the ‘calling card’ of low sec. Seed the raw materials and required plexes only in low sec, tweak the production chain, and you suddenly have a very specific reason for solo players or small corporations to set up shop. You’ve also given empire and null sec residents reason to visit and possibly given a boost (pun intended) to other industries as well.
The Freedom Buff: Incursion for Sec Status Gain
I understand CCP’s reasoning behind security hits in low sec. I’m not sure I buy it but it’s the way they want it and I presume that item is not up for discussion. The only problem with the status quo? In this ‘butterfly effect’/sandbox game once you get -2.0ish your wings get clipped and your sandbox gets a heckuva lot smaller. Drop lower and you’re even more locked in. For many reasons I don’t think that changing the security status gain for ratting is where we find a solution; where we could find it is within the upcoming Incursion Expansion slated for this winter. The solution is simple, elegant and doesn’t change the existing ratting mechanic (leaving high sec and null unaffected). Offer players extra security status gain for turning in special tags carried by Incursion NPC’s. Turn in the tags to the empire being raided and get a security and standings boost. Turn them in to CONCORD and get a bigger security boost. This new path to freedom makes ‘going legit’ easier and could have a ripple effect on the lowsec economy as well.
We shouldn’t ignore our slightly misshapen brother in the basement any more. If we can bust him out and hook him up with some Ben & Jerry’s I think the big guy can make everyone’s adventure a lot more fun.
